Hold the Line: How to Stand Firm in Faith When the Battle Rages

Twelve days ago, we welcomed our mighty Micah into the world. When we arrived at the birthing center, he was with us within ten minutes, fast doesn’t even begin to describe it. But instead of heading home, we found ourselves in the NICU, watching God work out a miracle story in real time.

These past twelve days have been humbling and refining. I’ve discovered things about myself, some good, some needing growth, but the biggest blessing has been the humbling. More than once, I found myself in the hospital stairwell crying out an SOS to the Lord. And every time I reached the end of myself, He met me there, giving me exactly what I needed to walk back into that room full of faith, ready to hold the line.

What It Means to Hold the Line

The very first thing God spoke to me as this journey began was, “Hold the line.” In military terms, that means refusing to give ground, no compromise, especially under pressure. In biblical terms, it’s the same as “stand firm” or “hold fast.”

1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (NLT) says:
Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love.

Holding the line isn’t about pushing back with physical strength; it’s about planting your feet in faith, refusing to be moved by what you see or feel.

Standing Firm in Faith

1 Peter 5:8-9 (NLT) reminds us to “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil… Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.”

Notice the pattern? Stand firm in your faith. The armor of God in Ephesians 6 paints the same picture: truth, righteousness, peace, salvation, and the shield of faith that stops every fiery dart of the enemy. Every single one.

Resisting the devil isn’t about shouting at him every two minutes. It’s about refusing to let go of what God has said, no matter what your circumstances look like. Faith says, “God, what You said is what I believe, whether I understand it or not.”

Keep Your Eyes on the Solution

In John 9:1-7, the disciples asked Jesus why a man was born blind, was it his sin or his parents’? Jesus didn’t entertain the “why.” He redirected them to the solution: God would be glorified through the healing.

That hit me hard. In the NICU, doctors gave updates every few hours, lab results, numbers, and problems. At first, I wanted to track it all. But God said, “Get your eyes off the problem.” You can’t keep your eyes on Jesus and the problem at the same time.

If you’ve already determined God’s outcome for your situation, why keep staring at the problem? Keep your eyes fixed on the One who holds the answer.

Continuing in Faith When Others Give Up

Remember when Jesus went to heal the twelve-year-old girl in Mark 5? She died before He got there, and everyone told Him to give up. But He kept walking. Even when the house was full of mourners laughing at Him for saying, “She’s just asleep,” He pressed on—and the girl got up.

Sometimes holding the line means continuing in faith when everyone else has given up. Even when the situation looks dead to everyone else, you see life because you’re looking through eyes of faith.

God’s Word Gets the Highest Place

Circumstances are real. Diagnoses are real. But they don’t get the highest place; God’s Word does. Romans 8:11 (NLT) says:
The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you.

Resurrection power is in you. So even when it looks over, it’s not, unless you give up on what God said.

My Sword for This Battle

In Ephesians 6, the sword of the Spirit is the spoken Word of God. In this battle, God gave me Psalm 112 (NKJV):

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord… His descendants will be mighty on earth… He will not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

We’ve been calling him Mighty Micah since before he was born. This was God confirming His word over my son, not just through prophecy, but straight from Scripture.

Receive the Victory Before You See It

Jesus said in Mark 11:24 (NLT):
You can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.

Faith believes it’s done before you see it. If you’re waiting for the evidence before believing, that’s not faith, it’s sight. When I picture Micah, I don’t see him in the NICU; I see him home, healthy, and strong.

Faith may look crazy to others, but it positions you for God’s results.

Know the One Who Wrote the Book

Rachel reminded us that faith isn’t just agreeing with words on a page, it’s walking in relationship with the One who wrote them. When you know His voice, you follow it without fear of being misled.

John 10:27 (NLT) says:
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

If what you’re hearing builds you up, corrects in love, and lifts you higher, that’s God. If it condemns or tears you down, it’s not Him.

Victory Is Yours

This battle has been full of opportunities to waver, but God’s been faithful to remind me: hold the line. Stand firm in faith. Keep my eyes on Him. Victory is already mine, not because I’ve earned it, but because He’s given it.

And the same is true for you.
