How to REALLY Know God

There’s something powerful about opening the Bible and reading something you’ve seen a hundred times, yet it suddenly comes alive in a completely new way. That’s because this isn’t just a book. It’s living and active, and it’s God speaking directly to you.

If you’ve ever wondered what God is saying, you don’t have to guess. He gave you His Word, and He gave you the Holy Spirit. There is no excuse for not knowing Him, because He’s already given you everything you need.

People Perish Because They Don’t Know Him

Scripture says that people perish for lack of knowledge, and that’s not talking about intelligence or education. It’s not about what you learn on Google or how long you were in school. It’s about knowing God.

People perish because they don’t know who God is and they don’t understand His will. When you don’t know Him, you live beneath what’s available to you. But when you truly know Him, everything changes.

That’s why today is about revelation. Because once you see who He really is, there is nothing that can stop you.

Jesus Already Told You the Way

In John chapter 14, Jesus begins with a powerful statement:

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.”

He goes on to say that He is preparing a place for us and that He will come back to take us there. That alone should stir something in you. The Creator of everything is personally preparing a place for you.

This is where understanding the Jewish wedding changes everything. In that culture, when a couple was engaged, it was as binding as marriage. The groom would leave to prepare a place, and only when the father approved it could he return for his bride.

The bride didn’t know the day or the hour, so she stayed ready. When he came, it wasn’t quiet. There were trumpets, celebration, and a procession as he came to take her away.

That’s exactly what Jesus is describing. He’s preparing a place, and He’s waiting for the Father to say it’s time. Then He’s coming back for His bride.

“I Am the Way”

When Jesus said, “You know the way,” the disciples responded honestly. They said they didn’t know.

Jesus answered with one of the most important truths in all of Scripture:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”

Then He immediately flips their perspective. He tells them that from now on, they do know the Father and have seen Him.

Think about how fast that changed. One moment they say they don’t know Him, and the next Jesus says they do. So now the question becomes, whose word are you going to believe?

You Already Know Him

This is where we tend to get stuck. We say things like, “I don’t really know God,” or “I just don’t feel close to Him.” But Jesus already said you know Him.

So now you have a decision to make. Are you going to believe your feelings, or are you going to believe Jesus? If He says you know Him, then you know Him. That’s the foundation of everything.

You’re Called to Do What Jesus Did

Then Jesus makes a statement that most people read right past:

“Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works.”

That’s not reserved for a special group of people. He didn’t say pastors, or people who went to Bible school, or people who have everything figured out. He said anyone who believes.

Then He adds something even more challenging:

“You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

We tend to read that and immediately shrink it down. We start filtering it through our own limitations and experiences. But Jesus didn’t qualify it. He said anything.

Why You’ve Been Asking Small

A lot of people hesitate to ask God for big things because they think it’s selfish. But Jesus actually tells us why we should ask. He says that when we ask and He answers, it brings glory to the Father.

That means asking big is not selfish. It’s actually part of how God reveals Himself. If you never ask, there’s nothing for Him to do, and no glory revealed.

So instead of asking small, we should be asking bigger. We should even ask God to teach us how to ask.

What It Means to Ask “In His Name”

When Jesus says to ask in His name, He’s not talking about just adding words to the end of a prayer. He’s talking about identity. To be in His name means you’ve been brought into His family. You carry His authority, His identity, and His covering.

It’s like a marriage. What belongs to one now belongs to the other. When you’re in Christ, what’s His becomes available to you. There are no limits on His resources. He owns everything. So when you ask, you’re not asking a limited source.

The Holy Spirit Makes This Real

Jesus didn’t leave us to figure this out on our own. He promised the Holy Spirit.

“He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth… you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”

You don’t know God because of how much you study. You know Him because He is in you.

The Holy Spirit teaches you, reminds you, and leads you into truth. Without Him, you can read the Bible and still miss everything. With Him, the Word comes alive.

God Does Not Lead You Through Pressure

One of the biggest misunderstandings is how God corrects us. Many people think conviction feels like pressure, shame, or condemnation. But Jesus said He leaves us with peace.

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart.”

God does not lead through pressure. He leads through peace, joy, and love. Even correction from Him comes in a way that brings freedom, not shame. If you feel constant pressure, that’s not God. That’s something you need to reject.

You Receive Everything by Faith

At the end of the day, everything comes back to one simple truth. You receive from God by faith. That’s how you received salvation. You didn’t earn it. You believed.

But somewhere along the way, we start making everything about our effort again. We wonder if we prayed enough, fasted enough, or did everything right.

The moment you do that, your faith shifts from God to yourself. And that’s the trap.

A New Starting Point

What would change if you started your prayers differently? Instead of coming unsure, you start with confidence:

Father, I know You.
Your Word says I know You.
I know Your voice.
I know the Holy Spirit is in me and leading me.

That changes everything. From that place, you can ask boldly. You can believe fully. You can live like what Jesus said is actually true.

So let today be a new starting point. From now on, you are led by the Spirit. From now on, you believe what Jesus said. Because if He said you know Him, then you know Him.
