The "Capital B" Blessing

God’s Original Plan for Us

From the beginning, God made the earth as a habitat for man. Whether you're into beaches or mountains, there’s a piece of His creation that makes your heart come alive. It was paradise—no disease, no pain, no death. And in Genesis 1:28 (AMP), it says:

“And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man]; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves upon the earth.”

This was God’s commission to humanity. But when Adam gave it all over to Satan, the blessing was interrupted. Thankfully, God had a redemption plan.

The Blessing Described in Deuteronomy

Even before the cross, God laid out the kind of life He wanted for His people. Deuteronomy 28:1–8 (AMP) shows what the blessing looked like under the Old Covenant. Spoiler alert: it’s incredible.

IF YOU will listen diligently to the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you heed the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shall you be in the city and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your body and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your beasts, the increase of your cattle and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading trough. Blessed shall you be when you come in and blessed shall you be when you go out. The Lord shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. The Lord shall command the blessing upon you in your storehouse and in all that you undertake. And He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you. - Deuteronomy 28:1–8

If you follow God's commands and are immersed in His ways, the blessing will not only come upon you—it’ll overtake you. It’ll chase you down. We’re talking blessings in the city and in the country. Your children blessed. Your income blessed. Your pantry full. Your enemies defeated before your face.

That was the Old Covenant. Now, imagine what we have access to through Jesus. As believers, we get the upgraded version—a far better covenant established on better promises.

What If I’m Not Seeing It?

It’s a fair question: what if you’re not seeing the blessing in your life? The truth is, the blessing is available to all of us. But there are a few key things we have to get in line: trust, obedience, and the removal of fear.

Trust God First

Proverbs 3:5 (AMP) says:

“Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.”

We have to trust Him—fully. I learned this the hard way when I tried to sell vacuum cleaners door to door. Turns out, I was a terrible salesman. That job wasn’t what God had for me. But once I trusted Him and let Him lead, things changed.

Obey What He Says

Trust and obedience go hand in hand. We can't do things our own way and expect God to bless it. Proverbs 3 already told us that. And the old hymn says it best: “Never fear, only trust and obey.”

Exterminate Fear

Fear will sabotage everything God wants to do in your life. It's the opposite of faith. 2 Timothy 1:7 (AMP) reminds us:

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, of cowardice, of cringing and fawning fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.”

When fear creeps in, get aggressive with it. Hunt it down like a bad smell in your house. Jesus constantly told people not to fear right before miracles happened. Why? Because fear blocks faith.

Know How Much He Loves You

If you really knew how much God loves you, fear wouldn’t stand a chance. You’d have no problem trusting or obeying Him. 1 John 4:18 (AMP) says:

“There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror!”

God’s love for you isn’t just a feeling—it’s a covenant. It’s something the Bible calls hesed.

What is Hesed?

There’s no true English equivalent for the Hebrew word hesed, but the closest translation is something like “lovingkindness”—love in action. In Exodus 34:6 (AMP), God describes Himself this way:

“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.”

He is hesed. It’s who He is. His covenant love never fails and never quits, even when the mountains crumble.

Isaiah 54:10 (AMP) says:

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed.”

This kind of love is what chases you down. And once it catches you, it changes everything.

Share Hesed with Others

Here’s the big twist: now that you’ve received hesed, you’re expected to reflect it to others. Micah 6:8 (AMP) puts it beautifully:

“He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and to love kindness and mercy, and to humble yourself and walk humbly with your God?”

We’ve been given the Blessing with a capital B not just to enjoy it, but to walk it out and share it with a hurting world.
