I was having kind of a dry week. You know those times when you just don’t feel like you’re hitting on all cylinders? When your prayer life feels a little flat and you’re not even sure why? I found myself asking, “God, what do you want from me?” And the answer I got wasn’t what I expected, but it was exactly what I needed.
Psalm 103:1-5 (Amplified) says:
“Bless affectionately, gratefully praise the Lord, O my soul; and all that is deepest within me, bless His holy name! Bless—affectionately, gratefully praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not [one of] all His benefits Who forgives each one of all your iniquities, Who heals each one of all your diseases…”
Sometimes, we just need to remind our soul to praise God. Even when it feels forced at first, especially then. How many times have you walked into church feeling off, but the moment you began to praise, something shifted? I’ve felt that myself. That’s the power of tuning your attention toward Him.
God’s love is described in this passage using the word “lovingkindness,” which comes from the Hebrew word hesed. It’s not just love, it’s covenant love. It’s steadfast. It’s compassionate. It’s loyal, even when we’re not. Hesed is how God describes Himself. It’s not just what He does, it’s who He is.
Even when we were running from Him, cursing His name, or aligning with darkness, He still loved us. And through Jesus, we now have a blood covenant with God that can’t be broken. It’s the kind of love that heals, forgives, crowns you with dignity, and renews your youth like the eagle’s (Psalm 103:5).
So I asked again, “God, why did You do all this for me? What do you want?” And He answered: He wants to show His hesed love to you. He wants you to receive and enjoy all His benefits. But more than anything, He wants your attention.
That’s it. He wants your undivided attention. To just hang out with you. To be with you.
My wife, Darla, shared a powerful moment she had while cleaning the house and listening to worship music. The Spirit told her to stop and really listen. As she sat down, she had a vision of a daddy-daughter dance with her Heavenly Father—her first ever. And by the end of the song, she said she felt two feet taller.
Why? Because when you give God your attention, He gives you encouragement, strength, and joy in return. He’s always thinking about you. You’re always on His mind. You just have to tune in.
The original covenant between God and man was breakable because man failed. But the new covenant is between God and Jesus. Neither of them will fail, which means the covenant can’t be broken. And because of that, there’s no curse left for us—only blessing.
That’s the kind of love He has for you. That’s hesed love.
He wants to bless you, wrap His arms around you, and say, “You’re my favorite.” And guess what? You are. I am. We all are. That’s the beauty of God’s love—it’s infinite and personal at the same time.
When you learn to receive this kind of love, you’re not just blessed for your own sake. You’re equipped to show others what that love looks like. You become a carrier of hesed. That’s how we reach the world. That’s how we show people that God isn’t distant—He’s right here, wanting to dance with them too.
So today, take a moment. Tune in. Let Him love you. Then love Him back.
That’s the one thing He really wants.
